Isn't it wonderful that we can communicate through the written word as well as the spoken word? But on our Planet we have a huge problem with illiteracy and the United States, the greatest nation in the world is not immune to this problem. Indeed, we have recognized it and are working on ways to improve literacy rates. In fact it has been a major goal of our First Lady Laura Bush and the Bush Administration was good enough to focus on this and put forth the "No Child Left Behind Act" which although is more symbolic than anything else, it shows that we all care about literacy in our schools. We do not want anyone going through our high schools and graduating but not being able to read.No one wants a population that cannot read official voting papers, road signs or the local newspaper for that matter. A more literate population improves communication and the transfer of knowledge to people. Communication is one of the most important needs of any civilization. Currently we are having a real problem with various immigrants to our country which do not finish high school and cannot read or can read very little perhaps a third grade reading level. This article is well above the third grade reading level, in fact it is about an eighth to tenth grade reading level. They would not be able to read or understand this article. So, aren't you glad you can read? Be sure to encourage your children to read and help others learn to read by volunteering to help in your spare times. There are non-profit groups in your area, which help people learn to read. What a wonderful way to help someone. Think on this.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board.
